Rice Krispie Squares
Do you love Indian food but are afraid to cook it at home for fear of the strong spices embedding themselves in the walls, forever to be smelled which no amount of Febreeze could assuage? Me too. Plus, I'm not that good of a cook--the only thing embedded in my walls is some caked on marshmallow from a failed batch of experimental Rice Krispie Squares. Needless to say, going to Massey's, located on King St. just east on Richmond, was something I was looking forward to.
How many of us make appetizers at home before a meal? And opening a bag of Doritos does not count as an appetizer. That's what I thought. Appetizers are the reward for going out for dinner--as if going out wasn't enough. Everyone ordered something ranging from an Indian version of popcorn chicken, to fried veggie patties, to the cheesy naan bread (which apparently was like eating a "cheesy pancake" according to One Reviewer). It was fun to share the different apps and like the Doritos from home, they were a yummy solution to a rumbling tummy without being too filling. On to the main course...the failed batch of Rice Krispies was an accident; One Reviewer's dinner looked like a failed experiment from home--but this was an intentional display of mushy spinach piled on some rice. Or rather, some rice covered in
salty baby poop. With comments like, "yum, yum, yum," "soooo good," and "delicious" it seems that at least half of the group enjoyed their dinner. Some of us, however, were underwhelmed (including One Reviewer and his baby poop stew). It would have been nice to have some combo platters that we could share so that the meal could be a bit more balanced out--a bowl of goopy proteins with a side of rice is a heavy meal. Jake was disappointed that the "double pepper" icon did not live up to its image, and my food, while good, did not wow me. I was hoping for tiramisu and got Rice Krispie Squares. Speaking of which, there wasn't much of dessert menu--the aforementioned metaphoric Rice Krispie Square would've been better than nothing (mmm...metaphoric marshmallow treats!).
Overall, the service was good, the decor was fine and it was a meal I wouldn't have had at home--there was snap, crackle, but no real pop; it was a nice and affordable night out but not one that will stand out in my mind.
